You may even generate a miniature earthquake yourself!  Join two thousand junior high students and numerous community youth groups for our two-day Earth Science for Society Exhibition at the Stampede Corral, Calgary.  The exhibition is a major outreach and education initiative presented in association with GeoCanada 2010, Calgary’s largest gathering of Earth Science professionals.  It is the ultimate opportunity for youth and the general public to learn about the Earth Sciences.  Learn how Earth Science plays a critical role in our society and make the connection between responsible resource development and the things we use every day in a fun, educational and interactive way.  Many of the exhibits will give you a “hands on” experience, from handling fossils to – yes - generating an earthquake.  The exhibition hosts five themed pavilions with a focus on Earth Science: Resources and You, Energy for Us, One Dynamic Earth, Your Career?, and Our Future!.  “We are as excited as the students,” said an Earth Science for Society volunteer. “Geoscientists enjoy sharing their enthusiasm about the Earth Sciences with others.  With so many exciting exhibits it is going to be a phenomenal event.”

Morning Programs
Tipis, Tales and Teachings Recommended for ages 4 – 7
You are invited to role-play with a museum educator to a time when Alberta’s First Peoples co-existed with the natural world. We will see how hides were tanned for clothing, hear stories told by elders and explore authentic First Nations artifacts. Students will create their own tipi to take back to school.

Comparing Cultures  Recommended for ages 8 – 12
What makes Canada’s Aboriginal groups unique? How does natural environment determine the food, clothing and shelter used by various groups? In this program, students will explore authentic artifacts from aboriginal groups in Canada’s north, south, east and west and discover each group’s distinctive relationship with the land.

Historic Globalization: A Critical Look at Canada’s Fur Trade  Recommended for ages 13 – 18
Through an in-depth look at Canada’s fur trade, students will explore what happens when differing cultures with vastly different worldviews come into contact. We will look at the cultures who were involved in the fur trade, the similarities and differences between each group’s worldviews and how this historic globalization shaped Canada’s modern-day identity.

Join educators as you tour Glenbow’s galleries where you will explore art and artifacts through hands-on activities. Each group will participate in a 30 minute, studio-based art activity that builds on the concepts learned in the morning program.
